TAMTAM deliver nets to rural health centers located in three districts in Western Kenya: Busia, Butere/Mumias and Bungoma. These districts are densely populated and rural, with a combined population of more than 1.7 million, and are located near the border with Uganda. This is an area of intensive, year-round malaria transmission. HIV prevalence among pregnant women is between 22 and 33%.
> Each year, an estimated 26,000 Kenyan children (that is 72 per day) die from the direct consequences of malaria infection. It is the number one cause of death among children under age 5. > Pregnant women suffer severe anemia, have low-birth weight babies and run higher risk of death from the disease. > Malaria accounts for 30% of all out-patient attendance and 19% of all admissions at the Kenyan health facilities. An estimated 170 millions working days are lost to the disease each year in the country. > Capacity and resources for prevention and treatment are inadequate. Africa south of the Sahara bears 90% of the global malaria burden. Every year at least 24 million pregnancies occur among women in malarious areas of Africa, yet less than 5% of pregnant women have access to effective interventions . |
